In
1980, the Peanut-UGA committee members led by Dr. David
Cummins and Dr.Tommy Nakayama visited Thailand to search
for peanut-cooperation with Department of Agriculture,
Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives and Kasetsart
University. Dr.Arwoot Na Lumpang being as the coordinator
invited Assoc.Prof. Vichai Haruthaithanasan and Dr. Chintana
Oupadissakoon join this meeting. They were interested
in peanut-cooperation with Peanut CRSP-UGA.
In
1981, Peanut CRSP-UGA, Department of Agriculture (Ministry
of Agriculture and Cooperative) and Kasetsart University
made a commitment to cooperate in peanut research. In
this agreement, improvement of peanut seed agricultural
technology was the duty of Department of Agriculture and
Kasetsart University was responsible for the process and
storage technology of peanut.
In
1993, since USAID regulation purposed to help undeveloped
country, which had the national income less than 1,000
dollars per year/person, Peanut CRSP-UGA project was ceased
partly because national income of Thailand had been increased
more than 1,000 dollars per year/person. However, in the
part of peanut transferring technology was considered
to go on.
In
1993, gathering of researchers to set up the Regional
Training Peanut Center was discussing at Kasetsart Agricultural
and Agro-Industrial Product Improvement institute; KAPI.
Prof. Teera Sutrabuttra was a consultant. Assoc.Prof.
Juangjun Duangpatra (Agriculture’s faculty member), Assoc.Prof.
Penkwan Chompreeda (Agro-industry’s faculty member) and
Assoc.Prof. Vichai Haruthaithanasan (KAPI) proposed a
proposal to the Peanut CRSP-UGA to ask for supporting
finance.
In
1994, KAPI was set as the Southeast Asian Technology Transfer
Center for Production and Utilization of Peanuts (Peanut
SATT center) which was supported the financial, $10,000
each year, by PEANUT CRSP – UGA. With this account, Peanut
SATT Center had to report work of plan, budget, and annual
report. However, the budget from PEANUT CRSP – UGA for
Peanut SATT Center was not given every year depending
on the plan for the activity in Asian area.
In
1995, before the retirement of Dr. David Cumming, Assoc.
Prof. Vichai Haruthaithanasan attended the meeting in
the USA to present the summary of peanut projects which
done in Thailand, for example, International Peanut Training
courses in 2002 and 2003.
